Notes
  • In some cases, the Census shows inconsistencies between rural PCA population and village directory population, or between urban PCA and town directory; we advise using the population from the PCA.
  • The town directory is only recorded for towns, and the village directory for villages. Places that have changed urban status will therefore be missing some before/after data. PCA fields are recorded consistently before and after these changes.
  • Zero population values may indicate abandoned villages or data entry errors at the Census. We advise dropping from analysis all locations with zero population values in any census year.
  • In 2011, the amenities tables separately reports the number of public and private schools; we add these together to obtain a count of the number of schools that is consistent with prior years. Users interested in the disaggregated public/private data can link the SHRUG to the raw 2011 Population Census data. Alternately, the raw Economic Census includes data on schools and includes a variable for whether it is government or private.
  • Some village/town directory fields contain errors or unrealistic values; these data are aggregated directly from the Indian government data and reported as is.
